Whether it’s a valuable painting, your child’s artwork, or just a picture you like, you might not realise that over time you will need to clean and protect your painting.
So, get your artwork on your spring-cleaning list and ensure it stays looking clean and vibrant for longer.
Prevention is better than cure
You don’t wait a whole year to dust your home or vacuum your carpet, so why wait when it comes to your art work? Clearing and cleaning dust from your artwork on a regular basis will not only keep it looking great, it will stop it getting dirty in the first place.
Cleaning your painting can be as simple as using a soft, dry brush and lightly dusting it or using a light feather duster; it’s important to remember that you should never add any moisture to the painting.
Talk to a Professional
In the cases that the painting is expensive, it is never advisable to undertake any cleaning work yourself. The Smithsonian’s advise that all painting cleaning is undertaken by a painting conservationist that has had years of training.
Spit and Polish
Whilst we don’t advise anyone clean their own valuable paintings, many museums and historians have been known to clean their paintings with saliva. Saliva is favoured over water as it is less likely to wear away at the paints structure.
There are a few things to remember before using your saliva, and that’s not to eat or drink anything other than water at least 30 minutes before cleaning the artwork; using a q-tip is a great way to gently remove dirt.
Protecting your painting from dust and the elements
Light, moisture and heat are the elements that can destroy a piece of art, so keeping your art in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight provide the perfect conditions.
The right frame with UV protection can provide a great protective environment to ensure your art continues to look its best.
Preserving your artwork has never been easier, simply come into Caloundra Framing and we can assist with any art restorations you might need. Perhaps you need an old photo restored, we have the ability to get your treasured possessions looking amazing.
